N. 6:1-6a NAZARETH REJECTS JESUS A SECOND TIME
a. 6:1 JESUS RETURNS TO HIS OWN PLACE

And he went out from there; and comes into his own :country;

and his :disciples follow him.
b. 6:2 SYNAGOGUE TEACHING AMAZES THE HEARERS
kai ge-noMEnou sabBAtou, ERxa-to diDAskein en tesu-na-goGE:
And when Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue:
kai hoi polLOI aKOUon-tes e-xePLEson-to [1605], LEgon-tes,
and the many hearing him were astonished, saying,
POthen TOUtoTAUta? kai tis hesoPHIa [4678]hedoTHEIsa TOUo,
From where has this man these things? and what the wisdom :given this man,
kai hai duNAmeis [1411]toiAUtai diA ton cheiRON auTOU giNOme-nai?
and what mean such mighty works wrought by his :hands?
c. 6:3a THEY QUESTION CONFIRMATION ON jESUS' FAMILY

Is not this the carpenter, the son of :Mary,
kai a-delPHOS IaKObou, kai IoSEtos, kai IOUda, kai SImo-nos?
and brother of James, and Joses, and Judas, and Simon?

and are not his :sisters here with us?

e. 6:4 JESUS STATES A PRINCIPLE
kai Ele-gen auTOIS ho IeSOUS [HOti] Ouk EStin proPHEtes Ati-mos,
And :Jesus said to them [that] A prophet is not without honor,
ei meen tepaTRIdi auTOU, kai en tois sug-geNEUsin [4773]auTOU, kai en teoiKIa auTOU.
save in his own :country, and among his own :kin, and in his own :house.
f. 6:5 LACK OF BELIEF RESTRICTS HEALINGS
kai ouk eDUna-to eKEI poiEsai ou-deMIan DUna-min,
And he could there do no mighty work,

save that he laid his:hands upon a few sick, and healed them.
g. 6:6a And he marveled because of their :unbelief.

O. 6:6b-13 JESUS TOURS GALILEE AND SENDS OUT THE TWELVE
a. 6:6b And he went round about the villages teaching.

b. 6:7-9 JESUS COMMISSIONS THE TWELVE

9but shod with sandals: and, not to put on two coats.
c. 6:10 And he said to them, Wherever you enter into a house, there abide till you depart thence.

d. 6:11 A SIGN PERFORMED WITH REJECTION
kai hos an TOpos [5117]meDExe-tai huMAS,
And whatever place receive you not,
meDE aKOUso-sin huMON, ek-po-reuOme-noi eKEIthen, ek-tiNAxa-te [1621]ton choun [5522]
and they hear you not, as you go forth thence, shake off the dust
ton hu-poKAtoton poDON huMON eis marTUri-on auTOIS.
that is under your feet for a witness to them.
e. 6:12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

f. 6:13 THE RESULTS OF THE COMMISSIONING OF THE TWELVE
kai daiMOni-a [1140] polLA eXEbal-lon [1544],
And they cast out many demons,
kai Elei-phon [218]eLAIo[1637]polLOUS arROstous [732], kai e-theRApeu-on.
and anointed with oil many sick, and cured them.
P. 6:14-29 HEROD MURDERS JOHN THE BAPTIST - TROUBLED CONSCIENCE
a. 6:14 HEROD'S “TAKE” ON JESUS' MIRACULOUS MINISTRY
Kai Ekou-sen ho ba-siLEUS HeROdes; pha-neRON[5318]gar eGEne-to to Ono-ma auTOU:
And :king Herod heard it; for his :name had become known:
kai Ele-gon HOti IoAnes ho bapTIzon [907]eGEger-tai [1453]ek neKRON,
and they were saying that John the Baptizer is risen from thedead,
kai diA TOUto e-nerGOUsin [1754] hai duNAmeis en auTO.
and therefore the powers are working in him.
b. 6:15a But others said that it is Elijah.

c. 6:15b And others said that it is a prophet, as one of the prophets.

d. 6:16 But :Herod, when HE heard it, said, John, whom I beheaded, he is risen.

e. 6:17 HEROD'S CONNECTION WITH JOHN

For :Herod himself had sent forth andlaid hold upon :John,
kai Edesen [1210]auTON en phu-laKE[5438]diA He-ro-diAda,
and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias,
ten guNAIka PhiLIPpou tou a-delPHOU auTOU, HOti auTEN eGAme-sen [1060].
the wife of his :brother Philip, because he had married her.
f. 6:18 For :John was saying to :Herod [that] It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your :brother.

g. 6:19-20a CONFLICT BETWEEN HERODIAS AND HEROD

And :Herodias set herself against him, and wished to kill him;
kai ouk eDUna-to; ho gar HeROdes e-phoBEIto [5399]ton IoAnen,
and could not; 20for :Herod was afraid of :John,
eiDOS auTON ANdra DIkai-on [1342]kai HAgi-on [40], kai su-neTErei [4933]auTON.
knowing him as a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe.
h. 6:20b And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and heard him gladly.

i. 6:21-22a THE PART HERODIAS' DAUGHTER PLAYED
kai ge-noMEnes heMEras euKAIrou [2121],
And when a convenient day was come,
HOte HeROdes tois ge-neSIois [1077]auTOU DEIPnon [1173]ePOIe-sen tois me-giSTAsin [3175]auTOU,
when Herod on his :birthday made a supper to his :lords,
kai tois chi-liARchois [5506], kai tois PROtois tes Ga-liLAIas;
and the colonels, and the chief menof :Galilee;
kai ei-selTHOUses tes thu-gaTROS [2364]auTOU He-ro-diAdos kai or-che-saMEnes [3738],
22aand when his :daughter Herodias came in and danced,

she pleased :Herod and his guests.
j. 6:22b And the king said to the damsel, Ask me whatever you will, and I will give you.

k. 6:23 And he swore to her, Whatever you shall ask me, I will give you, unto half of my :kingdom.

l. 6:24a And she went out, and said to her :mother, What shall I ask?
kai e-xelTHOUsa, EIpen temeTRI auTES, Ti aiTEso-mai?
m. 6:24b And she said, The head of John the Baptizer.
hede EIpen, Ten ke-phaLEN [2776]IoAnou tou BapTIzon-tos [910].
n. 6:25 HERODIAS REQUESTS JOHN'S HEAD THROUGH HER DAUGHTER
kai ei-selTHOUsa euTHUS meTA spouDES [4710]pros ton ba-siLEa,
And she came in straightway with haste unto the king,
eTEsa-to LEgou-sa, THEloHIna e-xauTES
andrequested saying, I will that you forthwith
DOS moi ePI PIna-ki [4094]ten ke-phaLEN IoAnou tou bap-tiSTOU.
give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
o. 6:26 HEROD'S OATH PREVAILED
kai peRIlu-pos [4036]geNOme-nos ho ba-siLEUS diA tous ORkous [3727]
And though the king was very sorry for the sake of his:oaths
kai tous a-na-keiMEnous, ouk eTHEle-sen a-theTEsai [114]auTEN.
and of the guests, he would not refuse her.
p. 6:27-28 THE FATAL ACTION
kai euTHUS a-poSTEIlas ho ba-siLEUS spe-kouLAto-ra [4688],
And straightway the king sent forth one of his guard,
ePEta-xen eNEGkai ten ke-phaLEN auTOU:
andcommanded to bring his :head:
kai a-pelTHON a-pe-kePHAli-sen [607]auTON en tephu-laKE,
and he went away andbeheaded him in the prison,
kai Eneg-ken ten ke-phaLEN auTOU ePI PIna-ki, kai Edo-ken auTEN toko-raSIo;
28and brought his :head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel;
kai to koRAsi-on Edo-ken auTEN te meTRI auTES.
and the damsel gave it to her :mother.
q. 6:29 JOHN'S DISCIPLES DO WHAT THEY CAN
kai aKOUsan-tes hoi ma-theTAI auTOU,
And when his :disciples heard it,
ELthan kai Eran to PTOma [4430]auTOU, kai Ethe-kan auTO en mneMEIo[3419].
they came and took up his :corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
NOTE: 6:1-6a - It is good for us to always remember that if our Lord and Savior was rejected when He came as the Son of man to earth the first time - weshould not be too upset if we too are sometimes rejected. As a matter of fact - we should rejoice, that we are joined with Him in rejection! We are making up in our body what Hestarted while on earth!
And, it is in our home, and among those we know, that rejection begins! This too, Jesus experienced. The sad thing is, that rejectors charge our atmosphere with unbelief, that hinders the power of the Gospel to be manifested.
6:6b-13 - Notice how Jesus sent out His first 12 disciples as apostles. They were to take littlewith them, but to depend upon the hospitality of those to whom they should minister. Also, whatever village or city they visited, they were to remain in the first placeshowing them hospitality until they were to leave. It causes division if we move from house to house seeking something better for ourselves.
6:14-29 - The sad story of the end of John the Baptist! Herodias was a very wicked woman, like Jezebel. She too will face a deserving future. So many prophets and men of God have suffered persecution and death for fearlessly speaking the truth. It is the sametoday. Truth-speakers according to the Word of God in many countries - Sweden, Canada and the United States for example, are suffering persecution and fines and even prison for declaring the Word of God as John the Baptist did in his day.
See too how foolish Herod was for making a promise with an oath. Jephthah did the same in the Old Testament. We must watch our words. They can bindus.
A special note: Prayfor the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosperthat love you! Psalm 122:6. Godhas chosen Israel the people, the land for her, and Jerusalem as her undividedcapital. He that has ears, let him hear what the Spirit of God says to the nations. This includes the United Nations, United Europe, Third world nations and the United States. Prosperity for nations and individuals is linked to the hearing and keeping of these words. J.A.W.
